On the 80th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the Congress is set to launch its campaign for the Maharashtra Assembly polls on Tuesday. The party is holding a rally in Mumbai, where top leaders from the Congress and its allies in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (SP), will also be in attendance.

Besides a rally at the Shanmukhananda Auditorium in Mumbai, Rajiv Gandhi’s birthplace, the party is also set to hold a public meeting in the Bandra Kurla Complex. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Sena (UBT) and NCP(SP) chiefs Thackeray and Pawar are expected to share the dais, while several other top state leaders are also set to attend.

Seat-sharing talks are still ongoing between the MVA allies for the 288-member Assembly. At a meeting last Friday, Thackeray demanded that the alliance declare its CM candidate ahead of the polls rather than wait until the results. The Sena (UBT) chief also said he would be ready to support any CM candidate from the Congress or NCP(SP).
