New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has expressed concern over the increasing number of so-called “digital arrest” cases, where individuals are allegedly coerced through online communication by impersonators posing as law-enforcement officials.

During the hearing, the court observed that such incidents raise serious questions regarding cyber security, misuse of technology, and public awareness. The bench directed state governments and investigative agencies to strengthen coordination and ensure prompt action against those involved in cyber-enabled fraud.

The court also emphasised the need for public advisories and awareness campaigns to help citizens identify fraudulent digital communications. Officials were asked to review existing cyber-crime response mechanisms and improve reporting and investigation processes.

Legal experts note that the observations underline the judiciary’s focus on emerging technology-driven offences and the responsibility of authorities to adapt enforcement frameworks accordingly.
